The benchmarks that matter
Three public reference points anchor BESS pricing in India today:
- Installed cost. Turnkey BESS capex for grid-scale projects now sits around ₹1.5–1.8 crore per MWh — a figure that keeps falling as global cell prices decline. Turnkey battery costs fell roughly 40% in 2024 and another ~30% in 2025.
- Tender-discovered tariffs. SECI and state tenders are the cleanest price signal: with VGF support, standalone BESS tenders have discovered capacity tariffs around ₹2.5 lakh/MW/month, down from over ₹10 lakh/MW/month in the first 2022 auctions — a fall of more than 75% in under three years.
- Viability Gap Funding. The central VGF scheme supports BESS projects with up to 40% of capital cost, materially improving project economics for eligible capacity.
What moves the price for your project
Per-MWh cost is not one number. The main drivers:
- Scale. A 100 kWh C&I cabinet costs meaningfully more per kWh than a 100 MWh grid block — fixed engineering, power conversion and grid-connection costs spread thinner at scale.
- Duration. A 4-hour system spreads its PCS and interconnection cost over more MWh than a 1-hour system, so ₹/MWh falls as duration rises.
- Cell choice. LFP cell format and vendor tier move the pack price; the 280–628 Ah prismatic classes dominate current pricing.
- Scope. “Battery price” quotes often exclude transformers, civil works, grid connection and commissioning. Compare turnkey against turnkey.
- Cooling and cycle life. Liquid cooling costs slightly more upfront and returns it in slower degradation — relevant if you are buying cycles, not kilograms.
The number that matters more than price
For a C&I buyer, the decision number is not ₹/MWh — it is payback: what the system earns per year from Time-of-Day arbitrage, demand-charge reduction and backup value, against what it costs. A cheaper system that degrades faster or misses peak windows is the expensive one.
