What is NTPC's 400 MWh battery storage tender in Maharashtra?

NTPC has invited bids for a 400 MWh battery energy storage system in Maharashtra, reported by Mercom India on 23 September 2026. The headline gives energy capacity only, not power rating, so discharge duration is not yet known. Two days earlier NTPC terminated a separate 400 MWh BESS contract at its Mouda plant.

What it means

The headline states energy but not power, so we do not show a discharge duration — a 400 MWh system could be a 200 MW two-hour battery or a 100 MW four-hour one, and that choice changes the equipment and the business case (see our duration explainer).

The timing is worth noting. On 21 September pv magazine India reported that NTPC had terminated a 400 MWh BESS contract at its Mouda thermal plant over contractor default. Mouda is in Maharashtra and the capacity matches, but the headlines do not say this tender is the replacement — verify against the bid documents. Either way, a default is a reminder that execution capability matters as much as price in PSU storage awards. Other NTPC calls include the 1,200 MWh Nokhra and 7,800 MWh Bikaner tenders.
