POWERGRID has invited bids for a 530 MWh battery energy storage project in Haryana, reported by Mercom India on 25 August 2026. POWERGRID keeps building a storage portfolio state by state — 530 MWh in Haryana follows its earlier standalone and West Bengal calls.

What it means

Because the headline gives energy but not power, the system’s discharge duration is unknown — and that single ratio decides whether it is a peaking asset or a long-duration shifting asset, as we explain in 2-hour vs 4-hour BESS explained. At 530 MWh it is mid-scale by current Indian standards: large enough for grid-side service, small enough to be delivered as a single site.

The buyer matters as much as the size. POWERGRID is a transmission company, and its steady run of storage procurement — after 3 GWh in West Bengal and its 500 MW / 1,000 MWh standalone call — points to batteries being bought as network infrastructure, the standalone BESS model rather than a generator add-on.

As of this briefing the tender is open at the bidding stage; the award will be updated here once declared.
