What is SECI's 100 MWh short-term standalone storage tender?

SECI is seeking 100 MWh of standalone battery energy storage for short-term use, reported by Mercom India on 28 August 2026. Unlike the long-tenure contracts that dominate Indian storage procurement, this is a short-duration engagement, and as of this briefing it sits at the bidding stage with no award announced.

A small, short-tenure central call — unusual enough to be worth its own note in our tender tracker.

A short-tenure call for 100 MWh — evidence that Indian storage is starting to be procured as a service, not only as a 20-year asset.

What it means

Almost all Indian grid storage is bought on long contracts, because a battery’s economics rest on spreading a large upfront cost over many years of cycling. A short-term call inverts that: the winning bidder needs assets that are either already built or fast to deploy, and prices the engagement over months rather than decades. That favours containerised systems, which we compare in containerised vs cabinet BESS.

One hundred megawatt-hours is modest against SECI’s gigawatt-hour rounds, but the structure is the interesting part — a step toward storage-as-a-service alongside the capacity contracts described in our SECI standalone storage tender guide and India’s wider storage policy.

As of this briefing the tender is open at the bidding stage.
