What is India's 10 GWh battery cell manufacturing tender?

India has launched a global tender for 10 GWh of advanced battery cell manufacturing capacity under its Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, aimed at grid storage. Reported on 17 July 2026, the call targets domestic cell production — the deepest gap in India's storage supply chain — and is open for bids.

A global call for cell fabrication — the deepest gap in India's storage chain. Packs and integration have localised faster than the cells inside them.

What it means

Most Indian localisation so far has been at the pack and integration layer; the cells themselves are still largely imported. A 10 GWh cell-manufacturing tender under the PLI scheme targets exactly that gap, and pairs with domestic assembly milestones like Pace Digitek’s 1.25 GWh output. Deeper localisation eventually feeds through to lower system prices for the standalone-BESS projects being tendered across the country.

As of this briefing the tender is open for bids.
