Mecpower plans a 5 GWh BESS factory in Gujarat; Kerala clears KSEB's 200 MW/400 MWh solar-plus-storage — 30 July 2026

The day to 30 July 2026 was led by supply-side news: Mecpower Solutions plans a 5 GWh battery factory in Gujarat. Kerala's regulator approved KSEB's 200 MW solar plus 400 MWh procurement, and MNRE opened Surya Ghar rooftop funds to energy storage — while GAIL, POWERGRID and Rajasthan's battery tenders stay live.

A round-up of the India storage headlines our desk tracked to 30 July 2026 — a supply-and-policy day rather than a big-tender one. Manufacturing led the wire, a southern DISCOM cleared a solar-plus-storage buy, and MNRE widened a rooftop scheme to cover batteries, while July’s grid-scale tenders stay open. For the running list of live opportunities see our tender tracker; if you are weighing a bid, our how-to-bid a BESS tender guide walks through the steps.

India storage headlines our desk tracked to 30 July 2026, grouped by theme — three genuinely new items (manufacturing, a state procurement and a policy move) plus the grid-scale tenders still open for bidders.

The manufacturing base

The day’s biggest number was on the supply side — the cells and packs every tendered gigawatt-hour ultimately needs:

A planned 5 GWh-per-year line adds to India’s Make-in-India localisation drive, joining AmpereHour Energy’s 5 GWh plant and the incentives we set out in our PLI for ACC battery manufacturing guide.

State procurement

A southern DISCOM cleared the regulatory gate for a solar-plus-storage buy:

KSEB’s 400 MWh rides alongside 200 MW of solar as a firmed-renewable hybrid — the same shape as GAIL’s larger call, and a signal that state utilities are folding storage into their renewable procurement.

Policy moves

Letting DISCOMs channel rooftop-solar (Surya Ghar) funds into storage widens the money available for distribution-level batteries — a small but useful nudge for the peak-shaving use case we cover in our DISCOM peak-shaving BESS tenders explainer. For the wider framework, see our India BESS policy overview.

Still live — open for bidders

The grid-scale battery calls from earlier in the month remain at the bidding stage:

Tender terms and deadlines change by notification — always verify the current bid documents on the issuing utility’s portal before acting.
