What is GAIL's 600 MW solar plus 550 MWh battery storage tender?

GAIL (India) has tendered a 600 MW solar project paired with 550 MWh of battery energy storage — a large solar-plus-storage call that firms daytime generation and shifts a slice past sunset. Reported by Mercom India on 22 July 2026, it widens grid-side storage procurement beyond the utilities and, as of this briefing, is open at the bidding stage.

What it means

This is a generation-plus-storage hybrid, not standalone BESS: 600 MW of solar with 550 MWh of batteries to firm output and push part of the day’s generation past sunset. Notably it comes from GAIL — a gas-and-energy PSU diversifying into renewables — which shows storage procurement broadening beyond the transmission and generation utilities. It is a larger cousin of Maharashtra’s 59 MW floating-solar-plus-storage tender and follows the pattern behind our solar-plus-storage solutions.

As of this briefing the tender is open at the bidding stage — bidders should confirm current deadlines and terms on GAIL’s procurement portal. For how central storage tenders are structured, see our SECI standalone storage tenders explainer.
