A short round-up of the India storage headlines our desk tracked to 22 August 2026 — two items, but both of the kind that move numbers rather than sentiment. Each substantive story below has its own datasheet briefing. For the running list of live opportunities see our tender tracker.
Central auctions
- SECI Announces Winners of 6 GWh Peak Power Supply Auction — Mercom India · read our brief
This is the big one. Six thousand megawatt-hours of assured peak supply, procured as four-hour blocks, is the largest long-duration round India has cleared — and because it is bought as delivered energy rather than as capacity, it produces a tariff the whole market can benchmark against. The tariff and the individual winners followed over the next few days; we cover them in the briefing and in our note on the assured-peak and FDRE framework.
Project financing
- Coal India Seeks ₹7 Billion Term Loan for 750 MWh Battery Storage Project — Mercom India · read our brief
Financing is the least glamorous stage of a storage project and often the most informative. Coal India tendered this 750 MWh system earlier in August; going to the debt market for ₹7 billion says the project is being taken through to funding rather than parked. It also puts a rough number on what utility-scale storage costs to build in India today — worth reading alongside our BESS price guide and the standalone BESS model it follows.
Tender terms and deadlines change by notification — always verify the current bid documents on the issuing organisation’s portal before acting.
