SECI hunts buyers for 7.67 GW of RE and storage; Crisil pegs 45–50 GWh of BESS by FY28 — 29 September 2026

SECI's search for buyers for 7.67 GW of renewable energy and storage capacity led India's storage news on 28–29 September 2026. Crisil expects 45–50 GWh of BESS to be commissioned across fiscals 2027 and 2028, the Power Ministry turned to captive thermal plants for non-solar hours, and NTPC's 400 MWh Maharashtra tender remained open.

A lighter day after last week’s run of awards. The feed for 28–29 September carried one large central procurement signal, a market forecast, a policy move on evening supply, and a repeat of NTPC’s live Maharashtra call. None of the new items gives a battery-specific MW and MWh pair, so there are no new datasheet briefs today. Open procurements remain on our tender tracker.

Central procurement: SECI looks for buyers, NTPC’s call stays open

SECI is seeking offtakers for 7.67 GW of renewable energy and storage capacity. The headline does not split that figure between generation and storage, so we have not built a datasheet for it. Finding discoms to sign power sale agreements is usually what unlocks the next round of awards; our SECI storage tenders explainer covers how that chain works. NTPC’s 400 MWh Maharashtra tender was reported again and remains live.

Outlook and policy: a 45–50 GWh pipeline, and the non-solar-hour gap

Crisil expects India to commission 45–50 GWh of battery storage across fiscals 2027 and 2028. On the same day, the Power Ministry turned to captive thermal plants to cover the shortage in non-solar hours. Evening shortfalls are the problem that storage is being procured to solve (see our note on India’s evening peak storage gap), so this move is a stopgap until that battery capacity is built. A Mercom piece on Uttar Pradesh’s rooftop and open-access market rounds out the day.

Pumped storage

NLC India Renewables has floated a consultancy tender for a pumped storage project. It is noted here for completeness; for how the two technologies compare, see pumped hydro vs BESS in India.

Tender terms and deadlines change by notification. Always check the current bid documents on the issuing organisation’s portal before acting.
