What is Exide's 6 GWh lithium-ion cell plant?

Exide has commissioned the first phase of a lithium-ion cell manufacturing plant planned for 6 GWh of capacity, reported by Mercom India on 24 September 2026. Domestic cell production is the scarcest link in India's battery supply chain, so commissioning moves an important share of future BESS cell demand onshore.

Cells, not packs — Phase I of a 6 GWh plant puts Indian-made lithium-ion cells into the supply chain that storage tenders now draw on.

What it means

Most Indian “BESS factories” assemble imported cells into packs and containers. A cell plant is the harder, more capital-intensive step, and it is where India’s battery import dependence is concentrated. The headline does not state Phase I’s own share of the 6 GWh, so we show the plant’s full planned capacity.

Cell localisation is the goal of the PLI scheme for advanced chemistry cells, and compares with pack-level plants such as AmpereHour’s 5 GWh factory.
